Uploading/Cropping Errors

Hey Dan,

Just wanted to comment on a few things.. hope the site turns out to be a success, I recommend contacting some of the tagging sites like tagfreak, net and gfxresource.com as this was fringe's primary member base back in the day.

I had some errors with uploading- first of all some of my images were cut off when I uploaded them, they were automatically cropped by this site. A bit annoying would be awesome if the site adjusted to the images aspect ratio. A secondary thing that happened, it blurred my images somewhat so they lose their crispness. Im not sure how to fix this but seeing as this is a portfolio/art displaying website, the upload and display system should be of the highest quality(in my opinion) and shouldn't detract from the quality an artist uploads.

One more thing, more of a suggestion.. would be awesome if we could click on an image to get a zoomed in view, maybe it expands and the rest of the screen fades to black until we click off.

In addition, some other problems/ suggestions

Each post on the main forum page as well as private messages display a two hours mark regardless of when they were sent

The forum is a bit hard to read and understand, it took me a while to find this category because of how the title block and descriptions are so similar in font type, treatment and spacing. If you take a look at some other forums on the web or those I linked you can see its easier to find where to go quickly.

Thanks for the feedback. About the cropping: You have an option to crop the image or use the full size in the upload area. By default its set to crop it, but you can actually set it to show the full image. I had a look at the image quality settings and it was in fact set to 90%, now it's set to 100. Will consider a lightbox in future in case full size will be considered.

As for the forums, I have changed the stylesheet a bit so it's easier to navigate.

The other things you mentioned are now also fixed (server time offset)

Thanks for your constructive feedback!

Currently the full size pieces are aligned to the top of the image div, I think it would be more suitable to have them centered as it looks a bit unbalanced this way.

We are still working on optimizing things. For example positioning / full size related options. Right now, for example, the max width is set to 650 pixels during the resize progress because many artists do not want their work to be freely available for others to download, so we might add an option where individuals can check a box and allow displaying the full size image and so on.

What you see here is the "first version", so there will be space for improving the system.

Hey, I just signed up and thought I'd upload some stuff, but it seems that the min. width is set to around 600px? This seems unfortunate because I do have some pieces that are made on a vertical canvas, making their width around 500. Though, I can definitely see why it was implemented, so I thought there might be an alternative. For example, instead of limiting the width, why not making it a requirement to have at least one of the lengths (length or width) pass a certain limit. Examples: 1920x1080 works because both pass the limit of 900px; 500x1600 works because 1600 passes the limit of 900px. 450x880 does not work because neither of them pass the limit of 900px.

Obviously you could set the limit to whatever measurement you want, 900px was just an example. Either way, I think it would be neat to get this changed somehow.

Since this seems to be the general bug/issue reporting thread, I'm going to post a few that I've had here.

1. Profile form - I was adding information to my profile and entered my personal web address in an incorrect format. When I submitted the form, the error popped up, but the form was also cleared of much of the information that I had filled out.

2. Tags - took me awhile to realize that tags need to be separated by commas in the profile skills section, would help to have some kind of hint with the tag field stating that.

3. Uploading - Am I the only idiot who took ten minutes to find out how to upload images? The red upload icon is nice, but I feel like there should be something more than that. Maybe a button on the main showcase page to take you to the upload page?

4. Quality - For some reason ever since I've gotten a new laptop with a 4k screen and photoshop cc, I've struggled to find a way to upload quality photos. They turn out funky on flickr and here as well. Maybe I'm the only one still having quality issues, but I'd be curious to see what others think. It might be helpful to put guidelines for uploading on the upload screen (e.g. - max file size, max dimensions, minimum dimensions, extensions allowed, etc.).

5. New posts - The forum organization here is unpleasant to me. I don't like having to enter every single board just to find out if there's been new posts. Most forums will show you the latest post with a timestamp on it with each board. I feel very strongly that this is a necessity to any forum. I assume you're familiar with a typical forum layout, but the 'last post column is what I'm referring to:

Most forums also have an icon system that tells you when new posts or threads have been made in each forum, it would be acceptable to skip the 'last post' information and just have a new posts/topics icon system. Basically, I don't really care how it's done, but there needs to be SOME kind of indication on the main forum when new posts/topics have been made on the individual boards.

I will continue to post issues as I see them.

edit: I see now on forums that have posts it shows at the bottom the newest topic and the latest post. That's a start, but it still requires the user to remember what they've read and what they haven't. Timestamps or an icon system would still be helpful. It would also be nice if there was some way to customize the 'unread topics' button so that you could choose what kind of unread things you want it to gather for you (e.g. - all unread topics, all unread posts, all unread topics/posts in specific boards, etc..).

Also, the cover photo has a suggested width, what's the suggested height for it? Because it looks like in the html the one that's uploaded currently is 1920x1212.

I'll check the reported items one by one and will get back to you when done.

Latest unread posts are located at: artisticscene.com

If you are logged in the forum start page shows a blueish button that says "Unread Topics"

^but doesn't that just show unread new topics? What about new posts?

Thanks for looking into it, I appreciate it. I think the quality issues have to do with how I'm saving my files from ps because I looked at your photos and the quality seems fine. I guess I'll have to do a little bit more research on that.

Edit:

So, I definitely suck at saving things in ps somehow, but there's apparently more to it than that.

this is a screenshot of what my upload looks like while i'm uploading it: i.imgur.com

New posts also show up in the unread topics section. As for the other things you mentioned, I'll look into this shortly.
